William Milton Asher Was An American Film Director, Television Producer And Screenwriter

early television directors of his generation, Asher created or directed over two dozen series. He died in 1997. He was best known for his work as a screenwriter. His many works include the popular television series “Happy Days” and “Billy Madison.”

The first thing Asher did after leaving Playboy was start his own company, Califa Entertainment. This company would soon become the most profitable channel in DirecTV and surpass HBO and ESPN in revenue. Bill Asher’s company changed the face of television and satellite. His network was so successful that two years later he sold it to Playboy for over $130 million.

Asher’s movies had a variety of themes. During the 1960s, he centered on surfers and the beach. His films were a hit with teens. He was also responsible for bringing Sally Field to the screen in Gidget. Asher’s films also featured classic movie stars, including Buster Keaton and Annette Funicello.

He directed a handful of episodes of Racket Squad and Big Town, but his first major project was directing the pilot of I Love Lucy in 1952. Asher was the director of the series for five years.

Asher’s work as a director continued well into the 1970s, when he directed episodes of “The Paul Lynde Show” and “Alice.” He directed television adaptations of “The Bad News Bears” in 1987 and “I Dream of Jeannie. Fifteen Years Later” in 1985.After his divorce from Bill Asher his wife Dani Sue Nolan, Asher became a father. Asher is the father of nine grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren.
