He started his career as a writer and then moved into filmmaking, directing and writing short films. His first film, “Fibber McGee and Molly,” was a failure as a television series, but he soon came up with an idea that made a hit and became a staple in movie theaters. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Asher, and 10 grandchildren and seven stepgrandchildren.
